The giant panda, also known as panda bear or simply panda, is a bear native to south central China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The name “giant panda” is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda. Bamboo shoots and leaves mske up more than 99% of its diet.
The giant panda has luxuriant black-and-white fur. Adults measure around 4 to 6 ft long and the average adult weight is 220 to 254 lb. Females can weigh as little as 150 lbs.
The giant panda has a body shape typical of bears. It has black fur on its ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, arms and shoulders. The rest of the animal’s coat is white. Although scientists do not know why these unusual bears are black and white, speculation suggests that the bold colouring provides effective camouflage in their shade-dappled snowy and rocky habitat. The giant panda’s thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat.
